The second round of the 2019 F600 Challenge Series at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) was very challenging due to the off and on bad weather over the whole event.  It did not start well on Thursday as Jeff Delong blew a motor, George Fox broke a PTO gear and Clint McMahan had a serious wiring problem with the newer motor that he had just installed since Road Atlanta.  Patrick and Eric McRee helped Jeff replace his motor and Dan McMahan and Bob Clay were taking turns working on all three cars on Thursday and Friday while it rained on Friday.  What there was of qualifying was in the rain and Clint McMahan was fastest with a 2:06.494, followed by Eric McRee (first time at VIR) at a 2:12.367, 3rd was Jeff Delong, 4th Jack Walbran and 5th George Fox; Calvin Stewart did not get a qualifying lap on Friday so he will start at the back on Sunday. With the rain off and on all day Saturday, the F500 race did not run until just before dark BUT it was mostly dry until race end.  Clint McMahan won with a fast lap of 2:01.997, 2nd was Eric McRee with a 2:06.001, 3rd Jack Walbran, 4th Jeff Delong and 5th George Fox.   Here is Clint’s post race interview –  https://www.scca.com/videos/2036480

Sunday was mostly dry but the schedule was still way behind so the F500 race started in the late afternoon.  With Calvin Stewart charging up from the back, this race was going to be interesting.  While following Clint, Eric McRee missed a brake point just before the Oak Tree Turn, going off course long enough to allow Calvin to get by just before race end.  Clint McMahan won with a new track record of 2:00.842, 2nd was a closing Calvin Stewart with a fast lap of 2:02.536, 3rd was Eric McRee with his best lap of 2:03.571, 4th, Jack Walbran, 5th, George Fox and 6th, Jeff Delong.  Here is Clint’s post race interview – https://www.scca.com/videos/2036511

After Round #2, the series points standings are as follows:

  1. Eric McRee 46
  2. Clint McMahan 40
  3. Jeff Delong 40
  4. Jack Walbran 40
  5. Craig Laprade 20
  6. George Fox 16
  7. Calvin Stewart 14

There is a three-way tie between Clint, Jeff and Jack.

The next round of the F600 Challenge Series will be at Mid-Ohio, May 31 – June 2.

The Formula 600 Challenge Series was developed to help promote an affordable open wheel formula car class to showcase talent without large financial race budgets.  There are no paid staffers and one hundred percent of all sponsorship monies and product goes directly to the drivers in our series mostly as a tow fund payment for each race.   The Formula 600 open wheel cars use a 600cc motorcycle engine and a six-speed sequential transmission revving up to 15,000 rpm with speeds in excess of 140 mph. The sound of these cars is likened to F1 cars.
